One of the worst problems to face during the hot summer months is a malfunctioning air conditioner. Many people are quick to call service technicians to diagnose and repair any issues, but that doesn’t have to be the case. If your air conditioning unit isn’t blowing air, there are simple troubleshooting steps that you can perform yourself before getting professionals involve. So before you call someone, try these steps:

1. Check the Main Electrical Panel
A tripped breaker or blown fuse will instantly stop your air conditioner from functioning. If this is the cause, your air conditioner can be up and running again just by resetting the breaker or replacing the blown fuse. If the breaker continues to trip however, you may need to get an electrician involved.

2. Make Sure the Thermostat is Set to “Cool”
This may seem like a no-brainer, but if the thermostat isn’t turned on, then the air conditioner won’t be blowing air! Make sure to set the thermostat to the desired temperature and turn on the cooling or heating function to activate the air conditioner. If the thermostat is off, try replacing the batteries and try again!

3. Make Sure the Power is On!
Check the switches in the air handler as well as the outdoor condenser. The compressor is also a vital piece of the unit, and if the 240-volt power has been shut off, the air conditioner won’t function.

4. Check the Compressor’s Capacitor
The capacitor is the component that starts the condenser and the fan. If it isn’t functioning properly, your air conditioning unit won’t either.
